ITINERARY – BRENO
MUSEO CAMUNO
Museo Camuno of Breno
Founded in the early twentieth century and inaugurated in 1923, the Museo Camuno is located in a fifteenth-century stately home of the Federici family, in the historic center of Breno, 30 meters from the church of Sant’Antonio. The Museum is the only art gallery in Valcamonica. It collects art, archeology, furniture, and books that bear witness to the artistic evolution of the valley and Lombardy over the centuries: a visit to the exhibition is an immersion in history and in the beauty of the whole area.

Christ on the cross and mystical marriage of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria
A canvas by Romanino is kept in the Museo Camuno in Breno, most probably painted for the nearby church of Sant’Antonio. The depicted Christ crucified is very similar to the same subject frescoed by the painter in the church of Pisogne. On the back of the canvas another painting has recently been discovered, depicting the mystical marriage of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, also by the hand of Romanino and datable towards the end of the 1530s.
