"Perhaps it is not heresy that Romanino was the true Atlas of Brescia’s pictorial universe of the 16th century”.
A journey to discover the painter Girolamo Romanino. Homo viator, restless pilgrim, Girolamo Romanino is part of those who “carry their suffering within themselves like a talisman” (cit. Eugenio Montale).
Girolamo di Romano di Luchino – also known as Romanino – was born in Brescia, presumably between 1484 and 1487. The first twenty years of his life are shrouded in mystery: nothing is known about his social origins or from who he learned the art from. However, it is assumed that he was the son of an artist, since his brothers and cousins were also painters.
