In 1456 the Senate of the Venice Republic allowed the new Captain General of the Republic of Venice, Bartolomeo Colleoni, to choose a castle on the border with the Duchy of Milan as his residence, in defense of the Republic. Colleoni preferred to buy the castle of Malpaga, and from a defensive fortress he turned it into a truly elegant court, calling on important Italian and French workers to decorate it with valuable frescoes and hosting the great personalities of the time in the castle, including Borso d&#8217;Este and the King Christian I of Denmark. Upon his death, the castle was inherited by his grandchildren: Malpaga remained in the possession of the Martinengo \u2013 Colleoni Family until 1885; in that year the building was purchased by the Roncalli Counts and in 1924 it became the property of the Crespi family.
